My Promise to You
Tax problems have a way of getting into every corner of life. They sit heavy in the back of your mind and steal the peace you need to focus on anything else.
At Burgess Tax Relief, tax problems are my specialty.
My role is to step into the middle of the mess and bring calm to a process that feels overwhelming. I promise to treat you like a human, not a case number, and to provide you with honest, steady guidance and a way forward that makes sense for you.
I make it a point to stay in touch on a regular basis, to explain what’s happening in plain language, and to keep the process moving forward until we reach a resolution. I will be in your corner from start to finish and you will never feel left in the dark.
Meet Karena Burgess

My journey into tax work began while I was serving on active duty in the U.S. Army. I can still remember the sting of embarrassment from failing my first audit without having anyone I could turn to for help. As we say in the military, all I had to do was “suck it up and drive on.”
Years later, after working through my own tax mess, I found myself in the finance department with the Department of Army, where small business owners started seeking me out. They needed their books cleaned up to win government contracts, and for the first time, I realized I could use my experience to make a real difference.
In 2014, I opened my own bookkeeping practice. What surprised me was how many of my clients were facing the same fears I once had over unfiled returns, IRS notices, and the weight of audits hanging over them. This was my lightbulb moment. This work went beyond simply fixing numbers. I was giving people the guidance and advocacy I wished I’d had during my audit.
So I went all in. I became an Enrolled Agent, federally licensed to represent taxpayers before the IRS, and in 2024, I earned the designation of Certified Tax Resolution Specialist. Since then, I’ve represented clients in tax controversy matters involving more than $5 million, bringing relief to individuals and businesses alike.
Beyond client work, I contribute to the Rockwall Times and NAEA, and I’m an active member of the American Society of Tax Problem Solvers, the Texas Society of Enrolled Agents, and the National Association of Enrolled Agents.
And when I’m not immersed in IRS cases or tax law, you’ll most likely find me in my garden, planning my next trip, or enjoying time with my family.
